PEER MENTORING

SMILES Peer Mentor program emphasizes the direct involvement of individuals with disabilities to serve as role models and provide independent living guidance to our consumers who also have a disability.  The program is based on the belief that some supported services are best provided by people who have a disability.  Peer Mentors share experiences, assist in establishing goals to increase independence and community integration, and provide educational and advocacy resources.  Peer mentorship is offered individually and in group settings.

VOLUNTEERS

As in any non-profit organization, volunteers play a significant role in the success of our CIL.  They serve as Peer Mentors, Senior Companions, and wheelchair ramp builders.  Our volunteers also help with various recreational classes, serve as board members, and help with fundraising and disability awareness events. Volunteers play a vital role in providing a quality Center for Independent Living.

RECREATION

Our recreation program is intended to promote many aspects of independent living, including community integration, disability awareness, peer support, and community outreach. It provides people with disabilities with a chance to participate in activities that are adapted to accommodate a wide variety of disabilities. The events assist in building self-esteem, teamwork, problem-solving, and social skills in a relaxing and fun environment.

STUDENT LEARNING AND INTERNSHIPS

SMILES offers short-term professional learning experiences and internships within our organization.  This allows students and recent graduates to gain practical work experience related to their career interests or fields of study. Our student learners and interns work on relevant projects, learn about the field, and develop hard and soft skills.
